Year 5/6 Street party

To finish off our unit of work on World War II, the children celebrated the end of the war with a street party.

The children travelled back in time for the day and came to school in 1940s dress. They spent the morning learning to add pounds, shillings and pence, before practising their handwriting and reciting a poem. The children had to keep on their toes during the morning as they had to react if the air raid siren sounded.

In the afternoon, the children listened to the famous Churchill radio broadcast that declared that the war with Germany was finally over. The children then spent the afternoon playing wartime games and eating a selection of homemade food for the street party – we had meat paste on toast, spam sandwiches, a selection of homemade cakes and scones and tinned fruit with evaporated milk!

It was a fantastic day.
