Gas has mass!

What could possibly go wrong? 26 children, 18 bottles of fizzy drink and the aim of the science experiment to shake out the bubbles!

Well actually  – nothing!

Beech class was investigating which are the fizziest drinks by seeing if carbon dioxide weighs anything.

The results were really surprising as gas does indeed have mass!

The children weighed the bottles before the shaking, ensuring a fair test with the same volume of liquid in each. They then took turns to shake out the bubbles, releasing the gas being careful not to let any liquid spill. The bottles were then weighed again. Surprisingly every bottle weighed less. The carbon dioxide from a 2 ltr bottle of pop weighs between 6 and 14grams.

A great experiment! Next week, melting chocolate!
