Exploring air resistance

Willow made parachutes today to explore the effects of air resistance.

In groups they decided which variable would change and which would be their control variables.

Some groups made different sized parachutes (but kept the string length and metarial the same), whilst other groups changed the string length and shape.

The children worked really well in their groups to create their parachutes.

Unfortunately windy weather meant we had to undertake the experiment in the stairwell, otherwise the parachutes would have ended up littered on local roofs! However, the models proved that the larger surface area created the most air resistance. Of course the force of gravity still won in the end!
