Creative Writing in Class 5/6W

This year we have been working hard in literacy trying to think about ways to uplevel and improve our own written work.

We have been looking at making sure our writing is interesting for the reader, well written and structured correctly. We thought that you might like to see a few examples of the work that we have produced over the year.

Example of a persuasive letter

Dear Mrs Driver,

I am writing to express my opinion about the school keeping a pet, from insects to rodents, after the devastating death of Roger the hamster in Class R. This death has caused an incredible amount of distress among the children and we must act now to prevent this from happening again.

Yes, I do know pets make good companions however who will look after it in the holidays. It also causes a rather big distraction to us when we are working.

Pets are wonderful and loving but on the other hand people in our school are afraid of pets and some are allergic to them.

I understand it’s a great way to share stories with someone else although it costs lots of money and takes space which could take up the reading space.

In addition to to my other examples there are health and safety difficulties due to the dirt and germs they are spreading round the classroom.

My final idea is it is so expensive for the cage and if we are planning on building more climbing frames we will run out of money.

I thank you for your time reading my letter and hope you take everything on board and act now.

Yours sincerely

Ben

Extract from a story about meeting a new friend or strange character

Mary tiptoed cautiously through the deep dark woods her knees knocking like wobbly jelly. Peter was different to Mary, he was a brave young boy who wasn’t frightened of anything. The woods were daunting as the moon arose from the pitch black sky.

“Err, Peter, where exactly are we going?” Mary quivered worriedly.
“Oh we’re just going for a walk Mary, don’t be such a baby.”

Suddenly a long thin figure emerged from the depth of the woods. Mary shrieked in horror, even Peter shivered he was so scared. The dark figure was coming closer, Mary holding her breath while Peter tried to be brave although inside he was petrified.

When it was coming closer Mary noticed that this frightening witch seemed to have large wrinkles all over her face with two evil red eyes and a pointy nose in the middle of her face.

As the doors were flung open, the luxurious aroma of delectable goodies wafted through the air, up, into my frosty nose.

I could see the multi-coloured lights and tinsel. It was like I was on a rainbow. I heard the pumping disco music, it was so loud.

When I opened my fizzy drink and drank it, it was like a volcano erupted in my mouth. I could feel the bubbles popping in my mouth.

When I opened my fizzy drink and drank it, it was like a volcano erupted in my mouth. I could feel the bubbles popping in my mouth.

Bang!

“We’re sinking!” shouted one of the crew.

“Help!” I screamed, splash! Gulp! I could feel the salty sea swimming down the canal of my throat. . As I gradually appeared out of the salty sea I saw it …Land.

I swam as fast as a sports car; but the sea was pulling me back. I was scared, scared stiff, I couldn’t think, what should I do? Should I try and get to land, but it was too difficult. Or should I try and get to the wreckage of the ship? What should I do?

I decided to aim for land. As I approached the land, I plummeted down into the sea. Gulp! I couldn’t breathe! I was scared ….

I could hear the waves ferociously chipping away at the edge of the boat. Everybody was running and screaming but I was like a rabbit in the headlights! There was a vast cracking noise we had crashed! No I won’t survive I’m only eleven.
I could hear the waves ferociously chipping away at the edge of the boat. Everybody was running and screaming but I was like a rabbit in the headlights! There was a vast cracking noise we had crashed! No I won’t survive I’m only eleven.
About ten minutes later when three quarters of the ship was gone I was splashing about in the water waving my arms up and down and all around. Some people were lucky enough to get a lifeboat, but me, not so lucky.
“Mum, Dad where are you?” I screamed.

No answer. I called again and again until I lost my voice. A colossal wave pulled me under! I was terrified and my heart was pounding. I couldn’t breathe. When I tried to get a breath, waves galloped over my head. How much water I was swallowing, I didn’t know? But the only thing I did know …I won’t survive!

As I see the rusty old ship go down, over the sound of the crashing waves, I feel angry as I remember the cantankerous captain obstinately saying we should go ahead. But he’s dead now.

As the waves engulf me I feel like a sea monster has pulled the ship to the bottom of the ocean. Every time a wave comes, it is a herd of rhinos stampeding with all their might at me. As I frantically swim through the ocean, I swim into a coral infested area and behind me I see …sharks! However they only go for blood, don’t they? But I see a trail of red leading from my severed arm.

Now I am petrified. The gargantuan waves are always going over my head. At least the sharks have gone.

Exhausted, I am ploughing through the small waves, but I almost drown in the big ones.

I hit the waves violently as I watched the ship go down further and further, it almost felt like I was going down with it.

I got a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach as the waves bombarded me but I decided to carry on.

The wind swept my hair and the salty sea slipped down my throat, at the same time I thought my lungs were going to burst.

Then I had a thousand thoughts go through my head, like – what will I have for dinner? When does school start? Even though I didn’t know if I’d survive the night.

Extract from a description of an imaginary setting from The Lone Robot

The huge, metal door swung open and the sight that met my eyes destroyed my hopes.

As I stepped in I did not see a thing but as my eyes got used to the light, I was disappointed. The walls were crumbly and the paint was coming off. On the floor was broken bricks and rats scurrying past. The lights were flickering on and off, sparks flickered out.

The smell made my nose twitch with disgust as it was very oily and musty.

All I could hear was the clinking of metal as they were making more robots out of a black, stuttering machine.
