Christmas takes over in Reception!

We hope you all enjoyed the Reception Christmas show. With all the practising for the show it’s a wonder that we fit anything else in this term, though looking back through the photos serves as a reminder of just how much we have squeezed in. So when you ask your little darlings what they have done with their day as they come out of school and they sweetly reply ‘Oh, nothing’, they are not quite telling you the truth! 🙂

Reception have had quite a few visitors this term. On the 16th November Pudsey Bear greeted the children as they arrived at school. The children later enjoyed buying, and especially eating, cakes for Children in Need. We were also very lucky to have someone come in to teach us some Bollywood dancing in November. It was tricky putting all of the moves together and we certainly need more practice but fun was had by all! Later in the term another visitor came to teach us about road safety. We learned about crossing the road safely and then put the skills we’d learned into practice with our makeshift zebra crossing. On the last day of term we had probably the most popular visitor of all when Santa came to visit!!!! He chatted to the children, read us all a Winter story and everyone received a present to take home.

When Ash class returned to class after seeing Santa, we discovered that our class dinosaurs had collected some candy canes under the tree. As there were 30, the children decided the sweets must be for them though the adults did try to convince them otherwise. The class dinosaurs will certainly miss the children over the Christmas break. The children have been writing letters to the dinosaurs and making up new stories for them. Miss Barnett told Ash class the story of The Gingerbread Man and the children retold this to their friends. The class dinosaurs must have been listening in as the next day they demanded a new story. As we had recently enjoyed Cops and Robbers by Janet and Allan Ahlberg, we decided to combine this with the Gingerbread Man story and came up with new stories about a robber being chased by various characters (decided by the children) for stealing Christmas presents.

Although we have learned new skills through our Christmas themed lessons and had lots of fun with our Christmas party and seeing not one but two pantomimes, we are looking forward to a new term and getting our teeth stuck into a less ‘Christmassy’ topic! Next term the children will be thinking about changes in their lives so far. A letter will go out to ask children to bring in 2 photos, one of them as a baby and one of them as a toddler. We will be learning about some fairytale stories, including The Three Bears, which will lead us onto our topic on teddy bears and toys.
