Maple visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum

On Thursday 10th May Maple class visited the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. As this term’s History topic is Ancient Egypt, we were very excited to see some real artefacts and learn more about the topic.

We started our morning off by learning that most of the objects were thousands of years old so we had to be very careful not to break anything! We split into our groups to take a closer look at artefacts across three rooms, including a sarcophagus, a mummy, canopic jars and lots other objects that teach us about the ancient Egyptian’s everyday lives.

After lunch, we had the opportunity to learn more about mummification and make our own canopic jar out of clay. In the style of the ancient Egyptians, we made our jars in the image of an animal – and we did a great job, if we do say so ourselves!

We ended our trip by having a quick look at a sculpture by Henry Moore as we will be studying his work later this term.

It was a lovely trip and the children were a credit to the school!
