  The William Ransom Primary School

'The William Ransom School aims to provide all its pupils with the highest possible educational opportunities. We believe that the best education is the entitlement of every child and this is realised at this School within a structured, disciplined, caring and safe environment where expectations are high.'

At William Ransom we follow The National Curriculum which is a set of subjects and standards devised by the government to ensure all children are taught the same thing.

The National Curriculum sets out programmes of study for all key stages, showing the subject content that needs to be taught to all pupils.

We use this to write our own curriculum jigsaw for each class to ensure there is progression and diversity as the children move through the school.

It is important that we devise a curriculum which:
- promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society
- prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life

It is our aim that in English our pupils can:
• read easily, fluently and with good understanding
• develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
• acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
• appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
• write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
• use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
• are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

Phonics and Reading Schemes used across Reception and Key Stage 1

All children in Reception and Key stage 1 follow Letters and Sounds. This is further supported by using Jolly Phonics and Fast Phonics.

Reading schemes that specifically teach phonics through reading:

Rigby Rocket

Floppy Phonics

General Reading Schemes used:

Rigby Star

Heinemann Discovery World

Four Corners

Ginn Lighthouse

New Way

Reading in Key Stage 2
Children are expected to continue reading at home and during designated reading time in class. Initially, children are guided towards books which suit their developing reading skills. Once they are confident, independent readers, they are free to choose their own reading materials whilst being encouraged to read from a list of 100 Books to Read before you leave Primary School. Our aim is to foster a love of reading and develop enthusiastic and well – read pupils.

It is our aim that in Mathematics our pupils:
• become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
• have the ability to reason mathematically using mathematical language
• can solve problems by applying their mathematical knowledge
